How Local Search can Increase Sales for Your Business
If you’re a local business owner I am happy to report that there is some really great news for you. The folks over at Google have taken the liberty of helping local businesses by prioritizing business listings in their search results. In other words, when you perform a search on Google you will notice that local businesses are ranked at the top of all search results. So what does this mean for you? The answer to that question is simple. Get your business listing in the top 7 spots of local search and you will see your sales increase. I bet you would like to see some numbers and facts to support this proposition? Well, I have taken the liberty to research and share them below.
Back on May 25, 2011 Greg Sterling of SMI, a consulting and research firm focused on the Internet’s influence on offline consumer purchase behavior, wrote a post that conveyed some very interesting local search statistics. In this post Greg conveyed how Marissa Mayer openly shared the following:
- 20% of PC searches ( 2.2 billion) in the US each month have a local intent
- local searches constitute 40% of all mobile searches
Essentially Greg (and Dan) “broadly estimate” that Google mobile searches are between 1.9 and 2.4 billion queries per month, with approximately 650 million to 795 million of them being attributable to local-mobile queries.
Collectively this data shows that some 440 million PC searches and 650 million mobile searches are conducted each month with the searchers intent on finding something in their local vicinity. These numbers are staggering and cannot be disregarded if you are a local business owner.
Clearly, if your business can be exposed to these searches and receive targeted visitors for your products and services, your business sales will increase dramatically.
What is Local Search?
Local search is a list of search results that display only local businesses when you perform a search in Google. Earlier this morning I performed a search in Google for the term “mechanic” and took a screen show of the results that were shown. As the screenshot below illustrates, out of the 26,700,00 results that are available, the first results displayed are seven local businesses in the Waukesha area.

Notice that the organic search results fall second to businesses listed in Google’s local business (“Places”) results. Now just imagine your business is Pearl Street Automotive at the top of the 7 businesses. Think how many people looking for a mechanic click on Pearl Street Automotive to get their phone number, visit their website to get more business information.
Imagine your business listing being featured in the top 7 results!

Does your business website rank poorly in the search engines ?
For several years now I have watched in great wonder as the internet has evolved into the largest, most effective means of sharing information, as well as marketing businesses and products. From the simplest thing such as email, all the way to purchasing products and services online, the internet has quickly evolved into the most effective and efficient medium of exchanging and finding information.
Knowing this fact, a majority of businesses have a website which provides vital information about their services and products, as well as contact information so customers and clients can quickly purchase their service or product. But just like many other marketing mediums, the internet has become a very competitive forum with numerous resources that provide similar products and services, and due to this competition it is possible that any given business website may not receive many targeted visitors. The most common reason for this is that the website has poor ranking and cannot be found on the first page of the search engines.
Obviously not every website can achieve a first page ranking, but business websites have a much better chance at achieving this!
If your business website is not on the first page your website needs help!
Is Your Website Insulated From Potential Customers?
Websites are very unique! Unlike a magazine, newspaper, or TV ad where businesses pay for an advertising slot and attain specific exposure that is guaranteed, the internet is a free-for-all that is primarily governed by the mercy of the search engines. Granted, your website may be live on the internet, but unless people who are interested in the product or services you offer have your website placed in front of them (like a paid advertisement) the effectiveness is nil. It compares to having your paid advertisement published in the middle of a magazine or newspaper where it is likely to be unseen.
Unlike conventional publications, websites are bits of information derived of markup code and keywords that are discerned and indexed by search engines. Search engines crawl website pages and analyze the data to determine where that information will be indexed in its information database for later retrieval. With the purpose of allowing relevant information to be found as quickly as possible, this index is comprised of data which ultimately creates a “web index” of website pages that are displayed in the search engine results pages.
For example, you may or may not notice that when you perform a search there is always a display as to how many results are returned for the specific search query you make. In many cases there are significant search results that are listed on many, many pages. In one sense these numbers may represent the level of competition for a specific keyword, product or service that is being offered. However, in many instances numerous pages from a single website are indexed in the search engines for the same search query and that is why you will notice very large numbers being returned for various search results. The goal of every business should be to have your website listed on the first page for as many keywords, products and services as possible. If your business website is not on the first page your website needs help!
Geographical Relevance
Geographical location plays an enormous role for local businesses. Generally when you perform a search in Google, Yahoo! or Bing, the search engine knows your specific geographical location and returns relevant results that fit your location. For example, if you search for a veterinarian it would make no sense for search engines to return results for veterinarians in another state or country because you are likely in need of a local veterinary business.
This same concept holds true for most local businesses, and fortunately the search engines have made ranking your business website that much easier through this geographical hierarchy. However, search engines don’t just park your business website on the first page because there are other local businesses that share the same criteria as your business. In essence your may be insulated from customers if it is indexed anywhere other than the first page of all the search engines.
Notwithstanding the level of competition your business faces, it should be the primary objective of every business website owner to have your website rank some where on the first page of the search results for your geographical business location. If your business website is not on the first page of all the major search engines for your geographical business location, your website is in trouble and it must be developed properly for the search engines.
How to Rank Your Business Website on the First Page
The best way to get your website ranking on the first page of all the search engines is to consult with a search engine optimization “SEO” services provider. Trying to accomplish better search results yourself could potentially do more harm than good, and that’s the last thing you need to happen. SEO is a delicate, time consuming endeavor that must be implemented with strategically precise accuracy.
Often times significant changes in search rankings can take days, weeks, and sometimes months to take effect. These tests are best left in the hands of a professional who knows how and when to implement them. Further, a seasoned SEO has endless resources and tools at their disposal that have proven to be both trusted and effective.
Choosing A SEO Service
Before you simply search for any SEO company and dole out lots of money, there are certain things you must understand about many SEO companies. Plainly stating, most SEO companies will charge outrageous prices and take advantage of people who don’t know any better. Further, some SEO companies employ methods that are less than favorable and cause permanent damage to website rankings. The best thing to do is to research local SEO services to compare prices, services, and guarantees. Check their references and other customers.
Meet with them personally and ask to see some of the websites they have developed, as well as how those sites rank in the search engines.
